The good news is that you can suspend .
how it works: before leaving port is in the insurance slip (the one on display on the windscreen) and the green card .
Since that time the insurance is suspended for a minimum period of three months.
Then, once back in Italy just re going to insurance (withdrawing the slip and the green card) and receive this treatment: the payment will be made slip of the suspension period (if this reaches at least 90 days).
For example: If I pay the insurance each year in early August to suspend for a period of three months, pay its renewal in early November.
The operation is free.
PS: For those interested, the minimum period of suspension of insurance instead of the bike is 60 days.
